Sustainable Architecture, also called green architecture, is a way of designing and building which takes advantage of the available resources, minimizing the environmental impact of buildings, both in the medium and long term.

Our firm has spent ten years orienting the architectural practice towards sustainability in all its works and projects. For this we have developed a series of strategies or points that consider all aspects of this transcendental issue.

 

Solar Control:  The use of eaves and sun-shading structures, calculated according to the solar angles of the site and located in the exposed facades, allow to control the incidence of solar rays in the glass planes generating shade in summer and thermal gain in winter. The use of skylights of proper dimensions produce natural lighting in environments where privacy is required, generating significant energy savings.

 

Natural ventilation: Window design according to the orientations and prevailing winds of a site allow the natural ventilation of the buildings, in many cases dispensing with the artificial air conditioning systems, with the consequent saving of energy. The location of interior green patios (as well as the skylights included in the previous point) are useful to ventilate and naturally illuminate environments that require a high level of privacy (for example, bathrooms).

 

Recyclable and Renewable Materials: The use of materials that are easily obtained by renewable sources (for example, wood) or that are recyclable after their useful life, also contribute to minimize the environmental impact of a building. Likewise, the energy consumptions for the production of the different construction materials are tabulated, allowing the selection of those that consume less not only for its manufacture but also for its transport on site.

 

Passive Systems: These include from the location, orientation and shape of the building relative to the sun's path, the strategic location of deciduous or perennial vegetation, up to the choice of insulating materials for the building envelope.

 

Active Systems: Active systems allow to minimize the environmental impact through devices that produce significant energy savings. These include pre-heating water panels (which allow water to reach conventional heaters with a temperature significantly higher than that of the main water supply), photovoltaic panels or alternative electric generators (turbines in natural water currents, windmills, etc...) for its immediate use (the storage of energy in batteries is not recommended unless it is absolutely necessary since it has a high cost and a very limited useful life), air conditioning by heat pump connected to systems of capture of geothermal energy . Also within these systems is the recovery of rainwater or the secondary sanitary system for reuse in the primary system or for irrigation of landscaped areas.

 

Domotics: These systems allow to monitor and control all the technical functions of the building (lighting, air conditioning, solar protection, presence control, access and leisure systems) by using zone controllers and a central computer that can be placed far from the building. This systems are permanently connected to any personal device (Smartphone, Phablet, Tablet, etc ...) for 24/7 supervision.

 

Green Roof: The construction of a green roof with native vegetation of minimal or no maintenance contributes significantly to recover the surface of absorbent land occupied by the building. This has an important impact in areas of high population density by avoiding the overload of rainwater systems during storms.

 

% LED: EThe lighting design of a building is relevant not only for functional reasons, but for its high aesthetic component, which is why we give special importance to this issue. The development of LED lighting has advanced a lot in recent years, allowing highly creative solutions with minimal energy consumption.

 

The total or partial use of these points allows the development of distinctive projects not only for their final image but also for what is not seen but is present in the daily use of the building. The energy savings obtained throughout its useful life is very significant, contributing to reverse degradation processes that can no longer be limited to a specific physical location; the actions that take place at one end of our planet affect the rest for good or for bad.
